Welcome, fellow herbivore!
We all know the “V-word” needs a better publicist.
The world isn’t always as friendly to vegans as it could be, and some vegans could be kinder to the world too (and even to each other!).
Wouldn’t it be lovely to have less drama and more bandwidth to celebrate the beautiful things we all stand to gain from going vegan?
Here’s what to expect from HUNGRY BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS…
Rediscover Your Why: Let’s be real. There’s toxicity around vegan practices both inside and outside of the vegan community. You’ll discover ways to reframe and reconnect with your Why to inspire instead of drain you and help you find joy and abundance in the journey of going vegan.
Fresh Philosophical Nuggets: Discover new insights from the cutting-edge of animal ethics that’ll have you nodding so hard you might strain your neck. (No animals were harmed in the making of these nuggets.)
Advocacy Tips Galore: Glean practical strategies for spreading the joy of #GoingVegan far and wide, making your advocacy even more effective (all without a single annoying numbered list)!
Heartwarming Tales: Ever feel like you’re more focused on animal suffering than animal flourishing? Heal that compassion fatigue and boost your creaturely joy in the dazzling company of grape-pilfering raccoons, evacuating geese, partying orcas, bees moving house, and Gus the bulldog–the intrepid canine who inspired this book.
Laughs Included: We know the issues inside are deadly serious, but we can learn to find humor and joy in the journey (especially when we’re laughing at ourselves…okay, with ourselves?)
Community Vibes: You’ll find tips on building and nurturing a supportive community, because we can’t make change happen on our own. And don’t worry–you’re the expert on your community; we’re just offering tools to help you shape your message with enthusiasm and resolve, whatever and however you are called to communicate to your people!
About HUNGRY BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS
Perhaps you’ve looked at factory farming or climate change and thought, I should become a vegan. Maybe you succeeded and things are going beautifully. Maybe you’re trying, but it’s a slog. But very probably, like most people who’ve entertained this aspiration, you haven’t found the gumption to try. And that might feel deflating–even demoralizing. Why is it so hard to do something that we strongly suspect we should?
Well, in our world, roast turkey emanates gratitude, steak confers virility, shawarma is the center of the street party, and chicken soup represents a mother’s love. Against attachments this precious, simply swapping meat for plants won’t work. Animal products are just too woven into the shaping forces that make us who we are to imagine living joyfully without them!
In Hungry Beautiful Animals, philosopher Matthew C. Halteman shows us how–despite all the forces arrayed against going vegan–we can create an abundant life for everyone without using animals for food. It might seem that moral rectitude or environmental judgment should do the trick, but they can’t. Going vegan must be about flourishing, for all life. Shame and blame don’t lead to flourishing. We must do it with joy, instead.
Hungry Beautiful Animals is more than philosophy: it’s a book of action, of forgiveness, of love. Funny and wise, this book frees us joyfully to want what we already know we need.
